So you've been trying to drum up a respectable online presence for a while now.

You see others do it. And it seems like everyone else makes it look so easy.

But success keeps on eluding you. Every time you get close to feeling like you're getting your presence firmly established online, something happens and you end up back where you started.

Not this time.

Because this time, you're going to be armed with the same tips, tricks, and secrets that the most well-established companies know. So give these tips a shot and see if they don't work for you, too...

Tip one: Never misrepresent yourself on your Business Profile.

WARNING: Business Profile is an integral part of your overall online presence. Make sure it's accurate. Never use false information in your Business Profile. There are a lot of little details that can make or break your online presence, and while leaving things off can give customers a bad impression about how authentic you are — and put pressure on you to provide more information to appear more legitimate — but avoid providing false or misleading information in Business Profile. Create a strong start to your business online by ensuring your information is accurate. When entering your Business Name and Contact details, avoid providing inaccurate information.

Tip two: Avoid having your Business Profile suspended for being an ineligible business. One of the main directories that Business Profile syncs to is Google My Business (GMB). A stipulation for representing a business on Google is that it has either have a physical location that customers can visit or visit customers where they are.

Since you are a teacher putting your skills to market, it's likely that you are establishing your online presence as an individual practitioner. This means that your Business Profile represents the public-facing professional presence for you — a teacher seeking your own customer base outside of your teaching job.

Tip three: Be sure to list Hours of Operation that actually work for you. Another stipulation toward qualifying for a Business Profile on Google is that, during your stated operating hours, customers have to be able to make in-person contact with your business.

Bonus Tip: If you do not have a physical, open-to-customers space for your business, be sure to mark the business as a "service area business".

Tip four: Don't let typos mess up your social media URLs. You might have certain social profiles with long, clunky URLs. Be sure to get each character correct to avoid broken social media links.

Tip five: Be sure to add competitor names and URLs in the Competition section of the Business Profile. This may not make a difference for you right away, but the information that comes from using competing businesses as sources of information will come in handy later.

Example: Share of voice is the percentage of users who see your website in their search results when they type a query into the Google search engine. It’s a metric that is used to help improve how your business ranks on search engine results pages and to track the strength of a website’s content at attracting more visitors. Adding competitors in Business Profile helps you benchmark the search engine prominence of those competitors against your business to measure share of voice.

Tip six: Allow yourself some grace when drafting your Business Descriptions. Your Business Descriptions include a tagline, short description, and long description. Writing good business descriptions seems like a simple thing to do, but it's actually fairly difficult. It's normal to feel a little overwhelmed when you draft descriptions for your Business Profile, but as a budding entrepreneur, you should have a clear direction in mind.

The purpose of these pieces of content is to help potential customers know more about you and what exactly your business is about. You need to understand what your business is about and how it will help potential customers get what they want. Ideally, your descriptions will include some keywords related to your target market and explain why your business is the best choice for a person who is looking for X or Y.

Tip seven: If you have a logo (or when you get a logo), upload the image to your Business Profile "Media" section. Doing this adds a pleasant touch to the way your business shows up in Google's local listings panel.

In sum: Establishing an accurate business presence online is actually pretty simple when you apply the above seven tips to complete a Business Profile in the Listing Builder. So let me leave you with one last tip...
